About Lemons

The Lemon Tree (by the scientific name of Citrus Lemon), belongs to the Rutaceae family of Citreae tribe. All members of the tribe have a characteristic fruit, the hesperidio, a type of yellow berry in which the skin is not detached from the flesh.
Besides the lemon tree, the Citric and the Votriokarpo also belong to this tribe. The origin of lemon goes back to Central India, where the first trees were cultivated. It is a cultivated hybrid derived from wild species, such as Citric and Mandarin.
The tree can reach up to 6 metres in height, but they are usually shorter. The branches of the lemon tree have thorns and the leaves are green and shiny. The flowers are white externally but tend to be purple internally.

Uses Of Lemons

Lemon juice contains about 5% citric acid (to pH: 2 - 3), which gives lemons their characteristic sour taste. The lemon leaves, the fruit, and the interior of the friut contain important components (essential oils, flavonoids). In Crete the lemon tree was considered noble and was planted in gardens and courtyards of classy mansions.
The lemon blossoms are still used today in wedding ceremonies in many areas as a symbol of purity, while the lemon juice finds many applications in folk pharmaceutical practice. The most fleshy part of the fruit of the lemon tree and the skin are widely used in cooking. Lemon juice can also be used in sunburns, chilblains, callus, psoriasis and hair rinsing. It can also help to eliminate freckles from the face. Gum rubdowns with lemon juice and salt cleans the teeth, protects the gums and helps to stop their bleeding.
